Phuket Police Crack Down on Illegal Cannabis Trafficking | The Fight Against Marijuana Violations

The picturesque island of Phuket, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, has recently faced a growing concern: illegal cannabis trafficking.

Phuket Provincial Police recently announced their plans to curb the illegal weed trade on the island. This comes in response to public complaints about foreigners bringing cannabis flowers and organizing unauthorized gatherings.

Police Commander Major General Sinlert Sukhum recently met with the Phuket Cannabis Association to discuss ways to monitor marijuana outlets on the island.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Police Commander Colonel Theerawat Liamsuwan, officials from the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO), and other members. The Phuket Cannabis Association was represented by its president, Poonwarit “Thames” Wangpatravanich, who highlighted the need for greater enforcement of cannabis industry regulations while maintaining access to medical cannabis products.

Fight Illegal Cannabis Trafficking to Prioritize The Safety of Tourists

During the meeting, we discussed how to ensure that the cannabis industry operates within the limits of the law, while still guaranteeing access to medical cannabis products.

Poonwarit stressed the importance of a balanced approach, saying that increased regulation would benefit the industry as a whole.

The main objective of the campaign is to ensure the safety of tourists, which is a crucial part of the island's economy. Maj. Gen. Sinlert warned that any non-compliant stores will face license suspension, which will be strictly enforced.

As the police step up their efforts to ensure a safer and more respectful Phuket, it remains to be seen how these measures will affect the island's cannabis landscape.

Nonetheless, authorities hope that these measures will reduce the illegal cannabis trade on the island and ultimately make it a safer place for tourists and locals alike.

Smoking Cannabis in Thailand: What Tourists Need to Know

Since some parts of the marijuana plant were removed from the narcotic list, cannabis bars, and weed dispensaries have become increasingly prevalent throughout Thailand. However, confusing laws and government amendments have created a "Wild West" atmosphere around cannabis that could potentially cause problems for tourists.

What Is Allowed?

1. Who Can Consume Cannabis?

It is legal for people over the age of 20 who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

2. Where Can You Consume It?

- It is permissible to smoke cannabis within the confines of one's residence.

- Cannabis edibles can be consumed only at licensed restaurants.

- Smoking weed in public places can lead to a $750 (25,000 baht) fine and a three-month prison sentence.

- There are over 5,000 cannabis stores nationwide offering THC-infused products, including flowers, pre-rolled joints, edibles, and CBD oils, with a THC level below 0.2%.

- In cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya, it's easy to find dispensaries. However, it's advisable to buy from licensed and reputable places.

- To grow cannabis, individuals must register with the Food and Drug Administration.

- Additionally, a permit is required to use cannabis flower buds for research, export, or commercial processing.

5. How Much Can You Consume?

There is no limit to how much cannabis you can consume for personal use. However, it is not advised to drive after consuming.

What Remains Prohibited?

1. Entering or Leaving the Country with Cannabis:

Tourists are prohibited from transporting any part of the plant or its seeds.

2. THC Levels:

Cannabis products (Like edibles or extracts) containing more than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are not allowed. THC is the psychoactive component of marijuana.

3. Selling to Certain Groups:

Selling cannabis is prohibited to individuals under 20 years old, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and other individuals specified by state law.
